Phil McKinney’s presentation on Innovation during Innovation Trip

By Anand Chhatpar

Phil McKinney runs an amazing podcast for innovation practitioners and enthusiasts. He also happens to be one of the CTOs of HP.

Phil was one of the key note speakers during our Innovation Trip program, which was designed to bring in leading CEOs and senior-level execs from other countries to the US for a 7-day innovation training and workshops program. He has been kind enough to share his presentation on his killer innovations methodology on his blog.

What was most interesting to me was to see the 3 questions that he asks himself when evaluating an idea:

  1. Will this idea change the customer expectation?
  2. Will this idea change the competitive landscape?
  3. Will this idea change the economics of the industry?

These questions are much more macroscopic than I think most of us use for our evaluations. It seems to me that the impact we create on the world can be greatly increased if we adapt such macroscopic thinking.

There are several other things in the presentation that are worth spending time thinking about. I hope you find this useful. We intend to provide all the training/workshop materials from Innovation Trip including this presentation in a binder available from the innovationtrip.com website very soon.

By Anand Chhatpar

BrainReactions founder and CEO Anand Chhatpar was interviewed and featured in a BusinessWeek article just launched and available to view online. One year ago Chhatpar was named by BusinessWeek as one of the top 20 entrepreneurs under 25 and later voted by readers as one of the top 5 under 25. Now, one year later, BusinessWeek reconnected with the top 5 which includes Chhatpar and FaceBook founder Mark Zuckerberg, to find out what has happened since they were featured by BusinessWeek. The article is titled “Where are Last Year’s Winners Now” and includes a number of quotes from Anand about entrepreneurship and starting a company. Correspondingly, there is also an updated slide show that includes some additional information on BrainReactions and Anand. The article also unveiled BrainReactions.net, an online brainstorming web application which has been in development for the past year. BrainReactions.net allows users the chance to brainstorm online and organizations the opportunity to gather ideas from a large global pool of idea generators. Click here to read the article.
